Education for a Global World – At Home and Abroad:
Internationalising Curricula as a strategic process at the University of Göttingen
The branding of Universität Göttingen „Education for a Global World – At Home and Abroad“ understands outgoing mobility and internationalization at home as two aspects, which strengthen each other. The tools for internationalization abroad and the one on campus create a framework together for a type of education, which conveys expertise on international issues, encourages intercultural competences as well as they induce students to changes of perspectives and to a reflection on a globally oriented viewpoint. During their studies, students have the opportunity to develop a “globally concerned citizenship” and to consider themselves as part of the international community from an early start, which enables them to act accordingly.
From these assumptions it is already clear that in particular the internationalization of curricula intervenes deeply in the “heart” of higher education institutions and initiates fundamental changes in teaching. According to the starting point of the keynote, this can only be successful if tools are adapted to each specific academic culture and academic tradition and if internationalization of curricula are operated as a process, which strives for incorporating different players through transparent communication and possibilities for full participation.
Initially the lecture embeds internationalization of curricula in the strategic planning for the university as a whole and continues from the context of the project “Internationalisierung der Curricula” at Georg-August-Universität, which can be characterized by the triad Internationalization – Digitalization – Diversification. By means of Kurt Lewin’s established “Three-Phase-Model” of change, it is shown how the process of change can be initiated, accompanied and supported as well as eventually stabilized.
